How do I see where my tracked keywords rank in Track?

Updated 2 min read

On this page

Open Track, then press Rankings in the row of views. You get two things: Keywords you are tracking, a table of every keyword you track with its position, change and trend, worst first; and Where your keywords rank, a weekly chart of how many of your searches sit in each position band, such as the top 3.

Track with its views across the top: This week, Rankings, Opportunities, Internal links, What changed and Changes to review
Rankings is one of the Track views

Keywords you are tracking

The table lists each tracked keyword with:

  • Position: where it ranks in the latest recorded week, or unranked if it has not appeared in search yet.
  • Change: places gained or lost against the week before (or since an older week when a week had no position).
  • Trend: a small line of its position over the weeks. The line is turned upside down so it rises when the position improves.
  • Clicks.

Keywords that need work come first. A falling keyword ends in what to do about it, with Win it back to put the task on your to-do list. Click any keyword to open its history, pages and next steps on the Keywords page.

If you track nothing yet, press Pick keywords to track. See track keywords.

Where your keywords rank

A bar for each week showing how many searches sit in each position band. Switch between:

  • Keywords: the number of searches in each band, the figure you would say out loud ("we have 40 in the top 3").
  • Share: the percentage of your searches in each band. Use this when comparing long stretches of time.

The line under the title says how the top 3 has changed since the first week shown. When some of your keywords sit at 4 to 10, a note suggests Push your page-1 keywords into the top 3, because the top three take most of the clicks.

Only searches with a minimum number of impressions in the week are counted; below that a position is not a real ranking. The page says the exact number.

Where the numbers come from

Both read our own weekly record of your Search Console data rather than asking Google live. That means the figures do not change between refreshes, cost nothing, and keep working past the 16 months Google keeps. The note at the top says Positions across all countries.

Questions people ask

Why does the chart show only one week?

We start recording when Search Console is connected. With one week there is no trend yet; a second week turns it into one.

Why is a keyword I track marked unranked?

It has not appeared in Google's results for your site in the latest recorded week. See no keyword data yet.
