How do I connect my Shopify store?

Updated 2 min read

In Shopify, create a custom app named "UtilitySEO" with the write_content Admin API permission, install it and copy its Admin API access token. Then in UtilitySEO open Project settings, find Shopify on the Connections tab, press Connect, and enter your store address (ending .myshopify.com) and that token.

Step 1: create the app in Shopify

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Apps and sales channels, then Develop apps. If Shopify asks, allow custom app development first.
  2. Create an app and name it "UtilitySEO".
  3. In its Admin API settings, give it the write_content permission.
  4. Install the app on your store.
  5. Reveal and copy the Admin API access token. It starts with shpat_. Shopify shows it only once, so keep it until you have pasted it.

Shopify's own help pages walk through custom apps in more detail if the menus look different on your store.

Step 2: connect it in UtilitySEO

  1. On the Projects screen, press the cog on the project to open Project settings.
  2. On the Connections tab, find Shopify and press Connect.
  3. Fill in: - Store address (.myshopify.com): for example https://your-store.myshopify.com. Use this address, not your own domain. - Blog handle (only if your store has more than one blog): leave it blank and we find your blog automatically. - Admin API access token: paste it.
  4. Under Publish posts as, choose a draft (hidden until you publish it in Shopify) or Publish immediately.
  5. Press Connect Shopify.

What you can do once connected

  • Publish blog posts from the Blog Plan to your store's blog. See publish to your website.
  • Apply SEO titles and meta descriptions you approve on Opportunities, to your pages, products, collections and blog posts. Other kinds of address stay copy-and-paste.
  • Unpublish a post or Remove from CMS to delete it from Shopify.

Questions people ask

Which blog do posts go to?

If your store has one blog, that one. With more than one, type the handle of the blog you want, for example "news", in Blog handle. You find the handle in the blog's address on your store.

It says the site refused our login.

The token is wrong or the app was uninstalled. Reinstall the app or create a new token, then connect again.

It says the account is not allowed to do this.

The app is missing the write_content permission. Add it in Shopify, reinstall the app, then reconnect with the new token.

Can UtilitySEO change my product prices or orders?

No. The connection only writes blog posts and SEO titles and descriptions, and every change is logged in Publishing activity. See publishing connections and activity.
