How do I see which searches moved, won or lost?

Updated 2 min read

On this page

Open Track and press What changed in the row of views. It compares two weeks from our own record of your Search Console data and lists your Biggest gains, Biggest drops, Newly ranking searches and searches No longer ranking, with clicks and impressions year on year once we have a year of history.

What changed

What you see

  • Comparing: the two weeks being compared. Both come from our own records, so the comparison keeps working after Google deletes its copy at 16 months. It also says how many weeks we hold.
  • Clicks year on year and Impressions year on year: this year against the same week last year. They appear once we have recorded a week from a year earlier.
  • Biggest gains: searches that climbed the most. Ranked on position, not clicks, so a move from 40 to 4 shows up before it earns a single click.
  • Biggest drops: searches that fell the most. Worth checking against what changed on those pages in the same period.
  • Newly ranking: searches you started showing up for.
  • No longer ranking: searches that dropped out. Some are seasonal; some are pages that slipped out of the results.

Each row shows the search, the page it was measured on and its impressions.

What to do about a move

Open a row to see what to do about it. Every kind of move becomes a task you can add to your to-do list, worded for the move:

  • a drop: Win back the search;
  • lost: Get it back;
  • a gain: Build on it;
  • new: Make the most of it.

When it is empty

Not enough recorded history yet means we have one week or none so far. We start recording when Search Console is connected; the second recorded week makes the first comparison.

Questions people ask

Why is this different from Search Console's own comparison?

Search Console averages every page of yours that appeared for a search. We measure the page that leads for it, so the numbers can differ. We also keep history Google has deleted.

Why is year on year missing?

We were not recording a year ago. It appears once our record is old enough.

Does it cost anything?

No. It reads data we already hold, on every paid plan.
