How does the Rank tracker work?
On this page
The Rank tracker shows where each of your tracked keywords ranks on Google, on desktop and on mobile, in your country. Open it from Search in the menu, then Rank tracker.
It appears once our search data provider is switched on for your account. If you do not see it in the menu yet, it is not on yet.
How often it checks
Every week, on Sunday from 6am your time. There is no daily check and no "check now" button: weekly is enough to see real movement, and it keeps the price of your plan down. Once a month we also look further down Google's results for the keywords that are not in the top 20, so you can see when one is climbing towards page two.
Checks only run for accounts used in the last 30 days. If you come back after a quiet spell, open the Rank tracker and it gathers fresh rankings straight away. While it does, the page says it is gathering your rankings; the first results usually arrive within the hour.
What you see
- Summary. Your average position on desktop and mobile, and how many keywords are in the top 3, top 10 and top 20.
- Trend. Average position, last 26 weeks, desktop and mobile. Higher on the chart is better.
- Tracked searches. Find a search, or filter to the top 3, top 10, top 20, not in the top 20, AI Overview shown, map results shown or moved this week. For each search: your position on desktop and mobile with the change since last week (an up arrow means you moved up), the page that ranks, and your competitors' positions from the same search.
- AI Overview. Shown means Google showed an AI Overview for the search; Cites you means it also linked to your site. This is checked on desktop only, so mobile shows "Not checked on mobile" rather than "None".
- Local pack. Whether Google showed map results for the search: In the pack, 2 means you were second, Pack, not you means others were there and you were not. See local rankings.
"Not in top 20" means your site was not in the first 20 results that week. It does not mean you have no ranking at all.
One keyword in detail
Select a search in the table to see its position each week for the last year (Weekly position, last 52 weeks, with Show competitors), a week by week table, and the results page Google showed this week. See results page snapshot.
Your country
Rankings are checked in your project's country. If your customers are somewhere else, change Country at the top of the Rank tracker. Owners and people with full access can change it; view-only members cannot.
Questions people ask
Which keywords are checked?
Your tracked keywords, up to 100 for each project. Add or remove them on the Keywords page. See track keywords.
Why is my position different from Search Console?
Search Console shows an average over many searches, places and devices. The Rank tracker shows one search from your country that week. Both are right; they measure different things.
Which competitors are shown?
The first three competitors you added to the project. See add competitors.
Can I download the table?
Yes. Export CSV downloads this week's rankings as a spreadsheet, with your competitors' positions.
