How is the health score worked out?

Updated 2 min read

On this page

Your health score starts at 100 and loses points for each kind of technical problem the site scan found, weighted by how serious it is and how many of the scanned pages have it. Speed is not part of it; it is reported on its own. While any scored problem is open, even a low one, the score shows at most 99.

How the points come off

Each kind of problem costs points once, however many pages it is on, plus more the wider it spreads:

SeverityMost it can cost
Critical12 points
High8 points
Medium3 points
Low0 points (listed, not scored)

A problem costs 30% of its points just for being there, and the other 70% in step with the share of scanned pages it affects. So a critical problem on every page costs 12 points, and the same problem on 1 page in 10 costs about 4.

This means fixing a whole kind of problem moves the score most, and a new kind of problem hurts more than one more page with a problem you already have.

What is left out

  • Speed. Page speed and Core Web Vitals (Google's measures of loading and steadiness) are listed in their own results and do not lower the score. A slow but well-built site should not read as broken.
  • Accessibility and server response time. These come from the speed test on up to 25 sample pages, not every page, so they are listed but not scored.

Where to see it

The score leads the Dashboard, with a small line showing it over your recent scans. Audit, Site Health shows the score and its trend (see the Site Health page), and SEO Results shows it with "based on issues found across N pages".

Questions people ask

Why did my score change when I scanned more pages?

The score is worked out over the pages that scan read. A scan of 100 pages and a scan of 2,000 pages can find different problems, so compare scores of similar size. The app says how many pages each score covers.

I fixed everything, so why is it 99 and not 100?

Something is still open, even if it is only a low-severity tidy-up. Look at SEO Results for anything not yet fixed; a score of 100 means the scan found nothing at all apart from speed and accessibility notes. The score also moves only when you scan again: ticking a finding fixed does not change it.

Is a high score a guarantee of good rankings?

No. The score measures the technical problems the scan found on the pages it read. Rankings also depend on your content, other sites linking to you and the competition. The score is a guide to what to fix, not a promise. See why results differ from other tools.
